Location and Resources

Dr. Gilbert’s laboratory is located in the Keenan Research Centre (KRC), at Unity Health Toronto. The Research Centre has an extensive shared core facility that provides best-in-class equipment including flow cytometry, bioimaging, single cell, nuclear and bulk RNASeq, and a state-of-the-art in vivo research centre along with routine genomics/molecular biology, histology, biochemistry etc. Professional training and technical support can be provided by the highly experienced core facility specialists.

Our Equipment

10x Genomics Chromium Controller

One of our lab’s foci is to examine diseased fibrotic tissue samples from different organs to understand the genesis of the disease and its mechanism. The Chromium Controller will be used for Single-cell RNA sequencing. In contrast to Bulk cell RNA sequencing, the new equipment will enable us to explore transcriptional changes in the behavior of more than 10 individual cell types within the kidney tissue. It can read up to 100 Kb and works by linking short read information together for an “in silico” look at the bigger picture of the long read. 10x Genomics organizes genetic information based on what is known as “read clouds” to map the larger picture of the genome. The tool’s unique “read clouds” feature is important for our research to better understand the mechanism of new therapies that we test in the lab.

Jess Simple Western System

Protein analysis comes with many challenges—labor-intensive protocols increase time to result and multiple hands-on steps increase user error and data variability. The equipment, Jess automates the protein separation and immunodetection of traditional Western blotting, eliminating many of the tedious, error-prone steps.

Our research projects relate to the use of new therapies for the prevention and treatment of fibrosis. Jess definitely not only puts our research at a higher level by gaining a deeper understanding of the treatment methods, but also dramatically improves our workflow efficiency, enabling us to quickly answer research questions and test proposals.

QuantStudioTM 7 Flex Real-Time PCR systems

The system supports a broad range of genomic applications, such as analyses of gene expression, microRNAs and noncoding RNAs, copy number variation, drug metabolism enzymes, and protein expression; SNP genotyping; and mutation detection.

The HALO® Image Analysis Platform

HALO is the gold standard image analysis platform for quantitative tissue analysis in digital pathology. With the easy-to-use modules, extensive analytics, and the fastest processing speeds, we are able to obtain morphological and multiplexed expression data across entire tissue, which significantly improves the data quality and work efficiency in the high-throughput, quantitative tissue analysis for our new treatment testing.
